Cities Skylines Bad Train Tracks | 7 great tips
I love trains! there, I said it. Most grown men & ALL boys love trains. Girls probably like them too, I don’t know.
So, when I see some of the designs people use for train intersections & lines in Cities Skylines it makes me cringe.

The thing with trains is this; they can not make sharp turns or go up & down steep grades. A 2% grade is usually about as much as trains want to climb. While some lines have hills as steep as 5%, it is very uncommon.
Here are a few tips for creating realistic train lines in Cities Skylines.
- Make gradual curves, the broader the better. You can tell if a curve is too tight just by looking at the trains when they go around them.
- Keep your inclines smooth & gradual. I try to stay below a 3% slope. Use a tool, such as ‘Node Controller‘ and/or ‘Move It‘ to keep your slopes nice.
- Another add-on that is handy for building train lines is ‘Network Multitool‘. It can help to make really nice, even curves.
- On lower capacity roads, don’t be afraid to use an ‘at grade’ crossing. This is where the road crosses a rail line directly.
- A wye should be pretty big to allow trains to pass each other without causing a traffic jam.
- I don’t really know what the purpose of the ‘one way’ track is for, so I recommend not using them.
Trains are awesome & can enhance your cities in many ways.
Don’t skimp on your train lines.
